Hybrid Synthesis: Rethinking Coastal Ecologies
This project delves into seascape ecologies, examining the intricate relationships between human-made pollution, natural materials, and the living organisms of the seaside. My work speculates on and explores the integration of plastic as a fundamental building block within the coastal landscape, demonstrating its potential to coalesce with both biological and material resources.
While marine plastic pollution is undeniably a critical global sustainability challenge with vast environmental, social, and economic ramifications, this project intentionally shifts away from critique. Instead, it accepts the prevailing global circumstances and approaches the issue from a novel perspective: investigating how plastic pollution can be researched, understood, and incorporated into our perception of the coastal condition. Through artistic practice, I aim to represent this evolving reality.
This endeavor stems from the observation that the conventional image of the seaside is often an unrealistic and nostalgic one. I am deeply curious about the new aesthetics that will emerge from this approach, and how the artistic process can update our collective understanding of the contemporary environmental situation.
The project, which began in 2018 as part of the "Memory of the Sea" initiative, is still ongoing.
